The Swedish Fur Rabbit

The Association: The Swedish Fur Rabbit association was founded in 1996 when the Swedish Fur Rabbit was very close to become extinct. The association's goal is to promote the Swedish Fur Rabbit and increase the number of breeding stocks.

Origin: Svensk Pälskanin translates to Swedish Fur Rabbit. The Swedish Fur Rabbit was developed in Sweden, and it was Otto Christoffersson from Helsingborg who got the breed approved in 1923. He crossed The Swedish Native Rabbit with some other unknown breeds.

The goal was to get a tolerant, easily breed rabbit which muscled well despite low feed quality. It is a rabbit breed for it's meat and fur, as well as for showing. Today most of the breeders only breed Swedish Fur Rabbit for showing purpose.

It's a good meat breed, the youngsters grow quickly. And they can be slaugthered early with a good meat quality

The bodyform is some elongated with a slight tall posture, even divide rounded muscle parties. The legs are sturdy and have an average height. The body has a robust impression.

The colour: The colour is the thing that make's the Swedish Fur Rabbit pretty uniqe.

If you see a Swedish Fur Rabbit on a picture you might think "oh it's just another Silver breed". But what makes the Swedish Fur Rabbit different is that they don't have silver hairs. They should have "stickelhair" that's when the white hair is white in it's whole length. Not just the tip as with the silver hairs.

A problem that often comes up when you breed Swedish Fur Rabbits is that the rabbits get too much stickelhairs so the rabbit looks grey.

It is also a problem when they get silver hairs, once you have got silver hairs in your stock it's hard to get rid of it.

Weight: 3,51-3,70 kg.

Eyes: Dark brown.

Claws: Dark brown.

Approved fur-types: Normal.

The Swedish Fur Rabbit today: Nowadays the Swedish Fur Rabbit is a very rare breed, in 2007's inventory there were only 41 registred does and bucks. The number is probably a little bit higher because all breeders aren't affiliated to the Swedish Fur Rabbit Association.

Totally, 17 does and 19 bucks were breed 2007.

17 liters were born with 92 babies.

61 rabbits were shown 2007.

We must have more breeders if the Swedish Fur Rabbit shouldn´t become extinct!
